0n the eve of World War II, the Jewish community was the second largest in Europe, numbering almost 900,000 people, despite 100,000 having emigrated 1881-1914. The History of the Jews of the Hungarian lands is an extraordinary one dating back nearly 2,000 years. They lived under Roman, Tribal, Christian and Moslem rule. The Jews were prominent in every walk of life – Politics, Science, Invention, Music, Theatre, Film, Banking, Business and the Professions. The Jews made up 23% of the population of the Capital, leading Budapest to be referred to as Judapest.
This course will explore the triumphs and tragedy of this extraordinary community.
