SUMMARY:Classi Lectures book In the Land of the Postscript
DESCRIPTION:Classi Lectures \nGoldie Morgantaler on her mother Chava Rosenfarb and Rosenfarb’s book In the Land of the Postscript \nWednesday\, 8 November 2023\, 4 pm  \nAs part of our continued partnership with Classi Lectures\, JGS Toronto members can attend the Chava Rosenfarb lecture at no cost. To discover how culture and learning unite through online lectures and in-person travels\, please visit Classi Learning. \nChava Rosenfarb (1923–2011) was one of the most important Yiddish novelists and writers of the second half of the 20th century. She was a survivor of the Lodz ghetto\, Auschwitz\, and Bergen Belsen. She settled in Montreal after the war and spoke in these stories from personal experience at the same time as she allowed her imagination to inhabit the minds of characters far different from herself. \nAs a way of marking 100 years since the birth of the great Yiddish novelist and poet the Polish city of Łódź — the city of her birth — has declared 2023 The Year of Chava Rosenfarb. \nRosenfarb was the recipient of numerous international literary prizes for her novels\, mostly about the Holocaust\, including the Itzik Manger Prize\, Israel’s highest award for Yiddish literature\, the Canadian Jewish Book Award\, and the John Glassco Prize for Literary Translation. \nRosenfarb was one of the few Holocaust survivors who transformed their experiences into works of fiction rather than memoirs. Her best-known work\, Der boym fun lebn (The Tree of Life)\, is about ten Jews from Łódź and how they fared in the Nazi-run Łódź ghetto. \nHer story cannot be told without including her marriage to Henry Morgentaler – Canada’s leading physician-advocate in the fight for abortion rights. \nGoldie Morgentaler translated “In the Land of the Postscript” and is a Canadian Yiddish-to-English literary translator as well as a professor of English literature. She currently holds a professorship at the University of Lethbridge\, where she teaches 19th-century British and American literature as well as modern Jewish literature. \n  \nRegistration \nJGS Toronto Members: Free. Click on this link. \nNon-members: $10 CDN. Click on this link.

SUMMARY:Daniel Horowitz Documenting the Toronto Jewish Families Project
DESCRIPTION:Documenting the Toronto Jewish Families Project \nDaniel Horowitz  presenting \nSeveral decades ago\, the late Dr. Henry Goldenberg\, a physician in Toronto\, asked his patients about\ntheir family histories. Based on what they told him\, he drew their family trees. The Jewish Genealogical\nSociety of Toronto was the recipient of this massive work. Volunteers began to upload data into\nMyHeritage in 2015 and thousands of matches were generated. The Goldenberg charts refer to close to\n3\,000 individuals and are a major resource for the Toronto Jewish Family Project. The number of entries\nhas grown exponentially and information is still being verified.\nDaniel Horowitz has been dedicated to genealogy since 1986. He was the teacher and study guide editor\nfor “Searching for My Roots” in Venezuela. A former board member of IAJGS\, Daniel is involved in\nvarious projects at IGRA (Israel Genealogy Research Association). Since 2006 he has been working at\nMyHeritage as the person liaising with genealogy societies\, bloggers\, and media as well as lecturing and\nattending conferences around the world. \nSunday\, 10  September 2023\, 10:30 a.m. \nzoom only

SUMMARY:JGS Virtual Event: Brick Walls and Breakthroughs
DESCRIPTION:BRICK WALLS AND BREAKTHROUGHS \nVirtual Meeting \n  Wednesday\, 21 June 2023 at 7:30 p.m. \n  \nBRENDA FAYERMAN is a first-generation Canadian. The daughter of Holocaust survivors\, she resides in Montreal. Brenda earned an MS in Computer Science and Mathematics from McGill University. She retired from a career as Technology Director at Bialik High School\, and now volunteers on the National Executive of Na’amat Canada\, and is a full-time grandmother of seven young grandchildren. \nHer topic is “What’s in a Name?”— two stories of how Ashkenazi naming traditions supplied clues to solving genealogical mysteries. \nHOWARD GOLDSTEIN was born in Montreal\, as were three of his grandparents. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in Computer Science. After working as an information systems consultant and owning an online business with his partner\, Howard retired in 2020. Howard coordinates the JGS Toronto Cemetery Project and is an active member of the board. \nWhen Howard’s third great-grandparents immigrated to Canada in 1911\, the passenger list noted that they were coming” to son & daughter.” He knew the son\, his bubby’s grandfather\, but who was this unknown daughter? Thanks to a combination of DNA and paper documentation\, he now has the answer\, along with a new branch of cousins…one of whom was a high school classmate! \nELEANOR MINTZ is a first-generation Canadian\, born in Ottawa with family roots in Germany\, Russia\, Ukraine\, and Galicia. She now resides in Toronto and Calgary and enjoys her six grandchildren. Her interest in her family’s heritage led her to actively engage in genealogical research and was spurred on by a treasure trove of German letters found in her mother’s nightstand. \nEleanor’s topic is “Searching for Ernestine Neumann: Finding my great-grandmother in the Jewish Hospital in Berlin\, August 1942.” This is an amazing story of survival. \nRegister at www.jgstoronto.ca/register to attend. A ZOOM link will be sent prior to the session. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:JGS Toronto Virtual Event: DNA SIG
DESCRIPTION:JEWISH GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF TORONTO \nDNA SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP (SIG)\nQ&A WORKSHOPS \nFeaturing our JGS Toronto members\, \nGil Bardige and Arthur Sissman \nSunday\, 11 Jun 2023\, 10:30 am. ET \nVIRTUAL MEETING: Join from Home \nVirtual doors open at 10:20 am. ET \nGil Bardige and Arthur Sissman\, both recognized as experts in Jewish DNA (see bios below)\, will once again be hosting our DNA Special Interest Group (SIG) program. \nOur DNA mavens will begin by answering questions submitted on this questionnaire form. Please submit your questions by 4 Jun 2023. A short educational presentation will follow to provide general mentoring on your DNA brick walls. If time permits\, Gil and Arthur will take questions from the audience. \nHere’s an opportunity to submit your DNA questions so that our mavens can try to provide you with guidance by directing you to specific methods and tips to further your research. By submitting your questions\, you agree\, if necessary\, to give permission to share your screen and the names of DNA matches and family tree members. This will allow others to benefit from observing the techniques used by our experts. We ask that you include as much information as possible with your questions and indicate what research you’ve done. \nWe are pleased to announce that this DNA SIG program will be open for both members and non-members. Future DNA SIG programs may be open only to JGS Toronto members to allow for the interactive presentations and discussions that are the hallmark of our SIG meetings. \nGil Bardige\, originally from Chicago\, has been a genealogist for over 40 years and a genetic genealogist since 2007. He has tested with the four major testing companies and is the co-administrator of three projects at FTDNA including Jewish R1B and R-A11711 Subclade Projects. He is Chair of the Columbus\, Ohio\, JGS; a volunteer at IAJGS Conferences (including the Program Committee); and Director of the Mentoring Program. Gil is a firm believer that you can use DNA results as a tool in your genealogy research. Over the last five years\, he has regularly helped people navigate their DNA matches by speaking at dozens of Jewish genealogical societies. After his presentations\, people say\, “Thank you\, Gil\, I am no longer confused!” \nArthur Sissman\, from Naples\, Florida\, has been engaged in family history genealogy since 1999 and genetic genealogy (DNA) since 2015. Arthur has built over 25 family history trees for his various family surname lines. In addition\, he has tested his autosomal DNA at all the major DNA testing companies\, and his Y-DNA and MtDNA at FamilyTreeDNA. Using his methods in DNA matching\, Arthur has found relatives previously unknown to him and has built out one family history tree by 150 persons in 10 days. For information on Arthur’s Jewish Genealogy SIG monthly meetings and scheduled workshops\, email genresearch13@yahoo.com. \nTo register for the DNA SIG event\, please go to jgstoronto.ca/register.\nYou will then receive an immediate acknowledgement plus the link to access the event. \nNote: the video recording of this event will be available to JGS Toronto members only. \nTo our guests\, consider joining JGS Toronto (for only $40.00 CDN\, $50 for couples per year) by Clicking Here.
