SUMMARY:JGS Virtual Event: Brick Walls and Breakthroughs
DESCRIPTION:BRICK WALLS AND BREAKTHROUGHS \nVirtual Meeting \n  Wednesday\, 21 June 2023 at 7:30 p.m. \n  \nBRENDA FAYERMAN is a first-generation Canadian. The daughter of Holocaust survivors\, she resides in Montreal. Brenda earned an MS in Computer Science and Mathematics from McGill University. She retired from a career as Technology Director at Bialik High School\, and now volunteers on the National Executive of Na’amat Canada\, and is a full-time grandmother of seven young grandchildren. \nHer topic is “What’s in a Name?”— two stories of how Ashkenazi naming traditions supplied clues to solving genealogical mysteries. \nHOWARD GOLDSTEIN was born in Montreal\, as were three of his grandparents. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in Computer Science. After working as an information systems consultant and owning an online business with his partner\, Howard retired in 2020. Howard coordinates the JGS Toronto Cemetery Project and is an active member of the board. \nWhen Howard’s third great-grandparents immigrated to Canada in 1911\, the passenger list noted that they were coming” to son & daughter.” He knew the son\, his bubby’s grandfather\, but who was this unknown daughter? Thanks to a combination of DNA and paper documentation\, he now has the answer\, along with a new branch of cousins…one of whom was a high school classmate! \nELEANOR MINTZ is a first-generation Canadian\, born in Ottawa with family roots in Germany\, Russia\, Ukraine\, and Galicia. She now resides in Toronto and Calgary and enjoys her six grandchildren. Her interest in her family’s heritage led her to actively engage in genealogical research and was spurred on by a treasure trove of German letters found in her mother’s nightstand. \nEleanor’s topic is “Searching for Ernestine Neumann: Finding my great-grandmother in the Jewish Hospital in Berlin\, August 1942.” This is an amazing story of survival. \nRegister at www.jgstoronto.ca/register to attend. A ZOOM link will be sent prior to the session. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
