According to the American Jewish Committee, Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi has ordered the Bassantine Jewish Cemetery of Cairo to be cleaned up. Work is set to begin immediately.
For many years, the AJC called for the cleanup and to make available the Egyptian Jewish communal registers. The Jewish community at one time numbered over 80,000 and today has fewer than 20.
Access to the communal registers documents the life of Egyptian Jews and their descendants including birth, marriage and deaths of the Jewish communities of Cairo and Alexandria. These records may be considered in lieu of civil records. The AJC and others has asked that a copy of the registers be deposited with the Chief Rabbinate of France. The AJC are hopeful that with President al Sisi’s decision will lead to the Egyptian Ministry pf Culture’s unfulfilled promise to allow the registers to be copied.
